How to Get More Gym Members Without Discounting

By Trevor Baker · October 21, 2026

More gym members rarely comes from a bigger discount. It comes from showing your community, making it easy to start, and following up with every trial. Here's the playbook.

When a gym owner tells me they need more members, the first idea on the table is almost always a discount. Fifty percent off the first month. No enrollment fee. Bring a friend free.

Discounts can fill a class for a week. They rarely build a gym. The people who join for the deal leave for the next deal, and you've trained everyone else to wait for one.

After years in the fitness and supplement world, including building a retail chain from one store to six-plus locations and co-promoting a regional fitness expo, here's what I've seen actually work.

1. Show the community, not just the equipment

Nobody joins a gym because of the squat racks. They join because they can picture themselves there, with those people, getting those results.

Your social media should make that picture easy:

  • Member spotlights. A real member, a real story, a real result. Ask permission, take a photo, write three sentences.
  • Coach introductions. People buy from people. Let them meet your coaches before they ever walk in.
  • Class clips. Ten seconds of a packed, energetic class does more than any graphic.
  • The small moments. High fives, PR bells, the 5 a.m. crew. That's your brand.

Post consistently. Three good posts a week that feel like your gym will beat one polished post a month.

2. Make starting ridiculously easy

Think about everything a nervous beginner has to do before their first class. Find your schedule. Figure out pricing. Wonder what to wear. Decide whether to call or just show up.

Every one of those steps loses people. Fix them:

  • Put the class schedule and a clear Book a trial button on your homepage.
  • Let people book online without calling.
  • Answer the beginner questions on your website: what to bring, what the first class looks like, who it's for.
  • Make sure your Google Business Profile has current hours, photos and a link to book.

3. Follow up with every single trial

This is where most gyms leave the most money on the table. Someone books a trial, shows up once, and never hears from you again.

A simple follow-up sequence changes that:

  1. Instant confirmation when they book, with what to expect.
  2. A reminder the day before.
  3. A same-day thank you after their first class, ideally from the coach.
  4. A check-in a few days later with the next step: a membership offer, a second free class or a quick call.

None of this needs to be manual. Once it's set up, it runs every time. That's exactly the kind of system we build in Growth Stack.

4. Give members a reason to bring someone

Your best marketing channel is already training in your gym. Make referrals easy and worth it: a bring-a-friend week, a challenge with a team component, or a thank-you for every member who refers someone who joins. Then promote it on social and in person.

5. Keep the members you already have

Every member you keep is one you don't have to replace. Watch for people who stop showing up, and reach out before they cancel. Celebrate milestones. Run challenges that give people a reason to come back after the new-year rush.

The short version

More members comes from three things working together: content that shows your community, a website and booking flow that make starting easy, and follow-up that never lets a trial go cold.

We help gyms, studios and coaches put all three in place. See how we work with gyms and fitness businesses, or book a free call and we'll look at yours together.
